Offshoare Ruderboot in der Lübecker Bucht

The World's Toughest Row

Fancy going on a boat trip?

We are pleased to introduce our fifth team member here: Our ocean-going rowing boat.

One of the most frequent questions we get is about our home for the journey.

What kind of boat is it anyway? Where do you sleep? And is there enough space?

Take a closer look at everything in our short tour.

Rowing positions

Our boat is an R45 elite, which means it is designed for 4 to 5 people. We can row in three positions at the same time, although we only want to do this in difficult conditions. During a normal shift, 2 of the positions are occupied

On deck

The open area of the boat is our living room, kitchen and bathroom all in one.

The kitchen and bathroom are at the front of the boat, and therefore at the back of the rowers. This is the only open space that is not restricted by the large rowing movements.

2 solar panels

provide sufficient power.

We use it to charge our 2 separately switched batteries, which supply all our electrical devices on board.

2 radios

on board help us to communicate with ships in the immediate vicinity. We have a fixed radio in the cabin and a mobile device. This means we can also communicate from cabin to cabin.

1 chart plotter

has already saved our route with waypoints. We use these points as orientation to take the most direct route possible to Antigua.

1 AIS sensor

helps us to recognise other boats in the vicinity at an early stage. We can then contact the boats by radio and coordinate that our routes do not cross. We don't want to get too close to them under any circumstances.

20 to 40 teams

Our boat has 2 large cabins. In the forward bow cabin (we call it the ‘nose’) there is plenty of space to lie down.

In the rear stern cabin (for us ‘technology’) you will find the controls for all the installed equipment and the rudder. Our feet have room below deck on the sides.
